Portrait of Milton S. Hershey the Chocolate King

“I have no heirs, so I have decided to make the orphan boys of the United States my heirs,” said Hershey.

Milton Hershey was born on September 13, 1857, in a farmhouse near the Central Pennsylvania village of Derry Church. Milton was in the fourth grade when his Mennonite father, Henry Hershey, found his son a position as an printer’s apprentice in Gap, Pennsylvania. Milton later became an apprentice to a candy-maker in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and candy-making became a passion which Milton grew to love.

He was a great man who started his company after some strong perseverance and with good intentions. He gave Hershey it’s wholesome family reputation. He made milk chocolate a treat all Americans could afford, and in the process cooked up a great fortune.

The great thing about that kind of reputation is it’s not that hard to protect it. The current company leaders are great at protecting the Hershey reputation. They keep a good radar system to watch out for potential set backs that may threaten that wholesome reputation.

Now they can work on enhancing the company’s reputation. Like fixing rumors about child labor and chocolate slavery over in Ghana. Thats when they cross over to issues management.

Milton Hershey also kept his legacy a and reputation through philanthropy. He built a school for orphan boys.

The memories of what it was like to have been a poor boy stayed with Milton Hershey throughout his life. They influenced him strongly when he later founded a school for needy children.
